I have provided labels to the left that will help you get to find some information in different content areas.

Math help can be found under Resources.

Language Arts and Social Studies helps can be found under Resources. The Oxford English Dictionary, Wikipedia, and others are there to help students with their school work. Check it out.

In addition, I have added a section to introduce myself and my interests. You might be tempted to say"So, that explains it!" after you read it.

Because homework is such a battle with a lot of middle schoolers, I hope to provide a place for students and parents to come for information on their work. Please click on Assignments to find out more about homeworks.

I added a section called What's Happeneing so everyone can find out what to watch out for in the future, and what we have just wound up. Information is power, and I'll try to make your very powerful!

The grade site is the main information place to be.

You will need the student's last name and their lunch number to pull up assignments and grades. Parents and students will be able to see what is turned in, and what still needs work. Block Assignments for week of 9-8-08

Monday:

Literature and Social Studies books were assigned and covered in paper covers.

In small groups, we made posters to help the 6th graders learn the behavior expectations for different areas in our building.

Tuesday:

The Register Guard will bed delivered every Monday for our class to use. Today I assigned the standing Monday RG reflection that will be due every Tuesday.

We brainstormed on writing lists that will be kept in our writing portfolios. This is to insure that we never run out of things to write about in later assignments.

Using pictures taken on my laptop, we matched up Manga bodies to illustrate our personalities. These will be posted in the classroom along with our name poems and name tags. Come see them at Open House.

Wednesday:

Plot: Duffy's Jacket in the literature book, pgs 2-4. Retelling exercise in class, pg 12.

Finished Mangas.

Introductory lesson in spelling/vocab is from pg. 1039, the first column, and Riki Tiki Tavi in our literature books. The words go in the LA spiral. A spelling/vocab test will be every Tuesday.

Started a comparitive governments unit using a handout, The Constitution.

HW: The rules in your home

Thursday:

Plot: Read Duffy's Jacket in class. Practice retelling with the blue WS.

Preamble WS (p. 38). Write Preamble in our own words.

Friday:

Look over the Book Orders from Scholastic. Orders will be due to the classroom on Friday,9-19-08. The blue Retelling WS is due.

Policies and Procedures

Mrs. Schmieding's Classroom Expectations:
1. Be in your seat at the bell.
2. Bring all needed materials to class including books, paper, pencils and pens.
3. Fill in your planner with the assignment written on the board at the start of the class period. Students may not write No HW. All students must write what the assignment was for each given day.

Parents may communicate with me using the planner. I will sign off on assignments if the student brings it to me at the end of the class period.
4. Respect extends to people and property.
5. Students' planner will be used as their Hall Pass once signed by the teacher. All students are required to bring their planner to class each day.
6. Friday is Friday Quiz day. Students will be tested on the content of that week. After the quiz, students will make up missing, incomplete, and work that has not achieved at least 70% accuracy. Full credit is given for assignments that is resubmitted with corrections made.

How much Math is enough Math

Your student will probably have about 20-30 minutes of homework a night. I try to give students enough time in class to at least get a good start on their homework. A lot of the students actually finish their homework in class...about half have to take it home. I would be glad to sign off completion of homework on their planner page at the end of class. Students must take the initiative to bring the planner to me the last 5 minutes of class along with their completed homework. Please let me know how I can further assist you in keeping your student organized and current.

An excellent new resource I will be using in class is Danica McKellar's book, "Math Doesn't Suck." I highly recommend this book as an at-home resource book. It's very common sense, funny, and current. I was able to find it

Welcome to my blog. I love to communicate...especially if it gives parents a step up on the homework battle. I teach 7th grade Math and 7th grade Block (Language Arts and Social Studies). This year I will also each a 6th grade Enrichment class that includes study skills, organization, a class novel, and a service learning project. More on that later.

My true loves are reading, writing and getting kids to trust their ability to pick up on concepts that they have heretofore written off. I hear it all the time, "I'm no good at_____. I'll never get it!". It's a joy to see them catch on in spite of their fears.
My background and hobbies include art businesses, sales, theatre (always a good tool in a middle school classroom!), gardening, singing in my husband's garage band, two adult children (one currently teaching Math at Forest Grove High School), and writing to intrigue.
